We Virgin Islanders are looking at the potential collapse of our economic, political and social structures. The crisis is a disastrous combination of a global recession, a 30-year public deficit, a punishing tax system, insane energy costs – and the sudden death of the Hovensa refinery. On top of all this, we are suffering a crushingly high jobless rate, a local government that is struggling to provide even basic services, one of the highest crime rates in the nation and a declining population that further threatens our tax base. It is a perfect storm, but one that is wholly man-made.
